In English, “there is” and “there are” are both used to indicate the presence of something, however, they are grammatically distinct. “There is” is used when the noun it introduces is singular, while “there are” is used for a plural noun.

For example, “There is a pen on the desk”, and “there are some pens on the desk”. Additionally, “there is” and “there are” are both often followed by a verb, such as “there is an apple in the basket” and “there are some books in the library”.
